After the crops are sown and at the time of little agricultural activity, in the seventh month of lunar calendar, a rite known as “Choekor” is organised in the villages by the entire village community with the aim of offering supernatural protection to the crops sown, for good harvest and to drive away evil spirits.

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the main states among the seven sister states of the north eastern part of India. The state’s unique culture distinguishes it from the other sister states of the region. Arunachal Pradesh has different topographical features and apart from Himalaya mountain range, there are fertile lands where cultivation takes place. Crop growing is the major livelihood of Arunachal Pradesh. Choekhor takes place after the crop is sown in the agricultural fields. Through the rites of Choekhor, the Arunachalis pray for a prosperous harvest.

Choekhor is the festival of harvest and crop. According to the locals the festival is to protect their crops from any supernatural attack. The entire village community takes part in the event to make it a grand occasion. According to local belief, the festival is mainly to protect and increase the crop.
Apart from this festival, Arunachal Pradesh is blessed with a wonderful culture and the New Year is celebrated with great ceremony. The new year is known as Losar. Monpa is another festival which has an agricultural theme. This festival takes place in the eleventh month of the lunar calendar. The local tribes celebrate the festival in their own unique way. All their festivals are made colorful and lively by their tribal dance and music. Festivals like the Choekhor and Monpa are celebrated to call on God to protect their crop and bless them with a good harvest.
