The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries. On this day people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Exchange of Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands is a popular tradition of this occasion.

The United States Congress, in 1935, proclaimed the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. Since then, celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event.

Following the popularity and success of Friendship Day in US, several other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today, Friendship Day is enthusiastically celebrated by several countries across the world. In 1997, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship.

Many friends wish each other with exchange of gifts and cards on this day. “Friendship bands” are very popular in India. With the advent of social networking sites, friendship day is also being celebrated online. The commercialization of the Friendship Day celebrations has led to some dismissing it as a “marketing gimmick”.

The modern Mother’s Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor its mother, and it’s now celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Father’s Day, the celebration honoring fathers.

This holiday is relatively modern, being created at the start of the 20th century, and should not be confused with the early pagan and Christian traditions honoring mothers, or with the 16th century celebration of Mothering Sunday, which is also known as Mother’s Day in the UK.

In most countries the Mother’s Day celebration is a recent holiday derived from the original US celebration. Exceptions are, for example, the Mothering Sunday holiday in the UK.

Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins.[citation needed]

One school of thought[who?] claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. This festival was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March.

The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day.

In addition to Mother’s Day, International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries on March 8.

Dates around the world

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days throughout the world. Examining the trends in Google searches for the term “mother’s day” shows two primary results, the smaller one on the fourth Sunday in Lent, from the British tradition of Mothering Sunday (it is also called ladies day and women’s day), and the larger one on the second Sunday in May.

The extent of the celebrations varies greatly. In some countries, it is potentially offensive to one’s mother not to mark Mother’s Day. In others, it is a little-known festival celebrated mainly by immigrants, or covered by the media as a taste of foreign culture (compare the celebrations of Diwali in the UK and the United States).

Pentecost is one of the prominent feasts in the Christian liturgical year, celebrated on the 49th day (7 weeks) after Easter Sunday – or the 50th day inclusively, hence its name. Pentecost falls on the tenth day after Ascension Thursday. Historically and symbolically related to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot or the day, fifty days after the Exodus, on which God gave the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai, Pentecost now also commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus as described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2 in the New Testament. Pentecost is also called Whitsun, Whitsunday, Whit Sunday, Whitsuntide or Whitty Sunday, especially in the United Kingdom. King Arthur gathered all his knights at the round table for a feast and a quest on Pentecost.

Pentecost is part of the Moveable Cycle of the ecclesiastical year. According to Christian tradition, Pentecost is always seven weeks after Easter Sunday; that is to say, 50 days after Easter (inclusive of Easter Day). In other words, it falls on the eighth Sunday, counting Easter Day (see article on Computus for the calculation of the date of Easter). Pentecost falls in mid- to late spring in the Northern Hemisphere and mid- to late autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

Since the date of Easter is calculated differently in the East and West (see Easter controversy), in most years the two traditions celebrate Pentecost on different days (though in some years the celebrations will coincide, as in 2007). In the West, the earliest possible date is May 10 (as in 1818 and 2285), and the latest possible date June 13 (as in 1943 and 2038). In the East, the earliest possible date is May 24, and the latest possible date June 27.

Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of “valentines”. Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.

The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women.

“Beauty is truth and truth beauty”, yes, if you visit the Garo Hills you would just echo Keats like this. Meghalaya is mainly inhabited by the tribal population, who have a specific religion of their own, the influence of Hinduism in Meghalaya cannot be ignores. This is apparent from the Festivals in the Garo Hills which is one of the exquisite places of travel in Meghalaya.

The Garo Hills in Meghalaya is sated with abundant wildlife that attracts many people from across the world. It has formed a valley in the middle, with the Arabella Range and the Tura Range that lie on the either side of it. This beautiful valley is known as the Balpakram Valley. With an amazing landscape, and a gorgeous sunset view, the valley is unique in itself.

Description of the Festivals in Garo Hills:
Since Balpakram Valley is situated rightly for wild life survival and wild life propagation, people visit this place not only to witness the marvelous sunset scene, but also the rare and exquisite creatures of the woods that lead a simple but adorable and uncomplicated life. Trekking and Rock Climbing form a part of the tour to Meghalaya and Garo Hills are famous for the Trekking Expeditions.

During November the Wangala Festival in Meghalaya deserves special mention. It is one of the religious fiestas of Garo Hills that is celebrated in the honor of the Sun God also known as the Salijong. It is time when the people of the Garo Hills rejoice the harvest of their well-deserved crops. During the entire year the denizens of the Garo Hills toil in the fields and try to procure a golden harvest at the end of the season. When the time finally comes, like the much awaited incident they sing and dance in the honor of the Sun God to mark the advent of the Golden Harvest finally. This is because mankind usually rejoices in their hard earned success rather than a gifted one. “One of the happiest days of my life is when I made five or six hundred pesos from a crop of watermelons I raise all on my own.”

The Wangala festival in Meghalaya also signifies the onset of the Winter Season and is also known as the 100 Drums Festivals, and it is such an incident when the tribal of Meghalaya offer their sacrifices to the main deity of theirs; he is of course the Sun God who is also known as the Salijong. The main attraction of the Garo Hill is the Siju Caves, and is also known as the Cave of the Bats; the Nokrek which is a canopy of a vast verdant forest.

Time for the celebration of the Festivals in Garo Hills:
The time for the celebration of the Wangala Carnival is in November so the best time to visit the Garo Hills would be winter so that one can observe the grand fiesta and also make sure that the wild life of Garo Hills is also enjoyed whole heartedly.
